TRU Edison Wolf singer, born for the Kin yaaâaanü , the Towering House People Clan, stopped to adjust the shoelaces of his hiking boots. Kneeling alongside the wide, flat Tsegi Creek, which flowed with quiet dignity through the bottom of Canyon de Chelly in Arizona, he spotted a red whirlwind dancing among the cotton wood trees. A distant sheep bell echoed off the high, vertical canyon walls, followed by the cry of a hawk. The leaves of the cottonwoods shimmered in the early-morning light. His spirit was peaceful in this place of great beauty that he visited in his dreams. Finished adjusting his boots, Tau stood up, and the dust devil vanished. Perhaps the whirlwind was a greeting from the Wind People who welcomed him home.
Just ahead, towering eight hundred feet above the floor of
the canyon, stood the immense red sandstone spire known as Spider Rock; a bloody needle poked into the blue eye of the sky. His uncle, Hosteen Joseph Wolfsinger, had taught him that Spider Rock was the home of Spider Woman. When the Navajo, who call themselves the Dineh , emerged into this world that we know, Spider Woman possessed great power. At that time, monsters roamed the land and killed many of the Earth Surface People. Spider Woman wanted to protect the people, so she gave Monster Slayer and Child Born of Water a charmed hoop of two eagle feathers to protect them. She also taught them a magic chant that would subdue the Naye âi , the monsters they would find on their journey. Finally, she told the Hero Twins how to find the turquoise house of their father, Tsohanoai, the Sun God. When they found him, the Sun God showed the Hero Twins how to destroy all the monsters on land and in the water. Tsohanoai gave them suits of flint armor to protect their bodies. He armed them with a great stone knife and arrows made of chain lightning, sheet lightning, sunbeam, and rainbow. With these weapons, Monster Slayer and Child Born of Water sought out the Naye âi and destroyed them.
For helping the Hero Twins on their journey, the Dineh honored Spider Woman as one of their most respected deities. She chose the top of Spider Rock for her home, then taught the Dineh the art of weaving upon a loom. Tau remembered that it was Spider Man, her husband, who built the loom. The cross poles were made of sky and earth to support the loom; the warp sticks were made of sun rays, placed lengthwise to cross the woof of the fibers; the healds were made of rock crystal and sheet lightning to maintain the fibers. He chose a sun halo for the batten and white shell for the comb. In this way, the Dineh learned to build looms and the women became accomplished weavers.
If young Tau did something bad, Hosteen Joseph Wolfsinger warned him to behave himself, otherwise Spider Woman would let down her web-ladder and carry him up to the top of Spider Rock to eat him.
